Shot on Film

Like many people, I've been taking pictures all my life. Some of the first artsy pics I snapped were with a film camera, my dad's Nikon. I remember entering them in the fair and I got no prizes, and will never forget the critique: "Soft focus is still focused."
Some of my first digital pictures were shot on a Sony Mavica, the kind that wrote to floppy disks. Then in college I started shooting with Olympus 4/3rds cameras, which were actually very good and opened up lots of creative possibilities. After college, I did photography for the marching band, which taught me a lot.
I got back into film photography as a pandemic hobby in 2020, and it really was an inspiration for me. It helped me think about composition and photographic decisions in a whole new way. It also was a great excuse to collect copious amounts of vintage gear, which makes any hobby more fun. I started repairing old cameras (as one is almost forced to do if one acquires them) and learning how they work and how to make them actually work. At some point I'll share my camera collection here, but in short, I have a few Olympus OM-2n bodies, lots of lenses for those, and my fav medium format rangefinder, the Fujica GS645. But most of the time I shoot with a Canonet QL-17 gIII. It's just a wonderfully balanced camera, small and portable with a great lens and wonderful ergonomics.
