The Birth of a Hummingbird
Thursday, March 15th, 2007
My girlfriend discovered the most amazing thing last month in a tree right outside her apartment window — it was a hummingbird nest! Not something you get to see every day when you step out your door, but she did for over a month! It all started with the mommy hummingbird just sitting in her nest incubating eggs…

Keep reading for over a dozen pictures, including one of a baby hummingbird learning how to fly. It’s priceless, don’t miss out on this one. Read the rest of this entry »
View of the Bay
Monday, February 12th, 2007
I wouldn’t normally hotlink an image, but this one’s dynamic and frankly, the load from this site won’t hurt them.
This is how I watch the sky these days when I can’t get my own eyes above the buildings. It happens to be one of the best webcams I know of, situated in the perfect place.
Update: changed to a static image as of 2/18
I’m somewhere down there. Just a minute ago it was pouring rain, and a minute later the rain stopped and the sun came out under the clouds right over the golden gate and the whole bay area was shrouded in red. It happens once every few weeks, but it’s very cool when it does. It’s like the world is pointing a big red flashlight at everyone’s face saying, wake up! You’re alive, ain’t it great?
And no, I don’t always watch the sky on my computer screen. I do actually go outside every once in a while… ![]()
Camera Stolen…
Monday, June 26th, 2006
I feel really stupid for leaving my car unlocked last week, and my camera, a nice Olympus E300 DSLR was stolen out of it, along with two nice lenses and a memory card I just bought! I was very saddened.
Anyway, it’s been a long while. A boring and challenging day job wears you out and if you don’t simply relax during off-hours you can’t really survive I don’t think. So unfortunately I haven’t had any drive to work on zenphoto, or on anything else for that matter. The job is sucking the life out of me.
Fortunately I’m going to Europe for three weeks in July to fix that.
Alright, time to head home. Monday is finally over…
Go Bears!
Friday, November 18th, 2005

It’s the 108th BIG GAME! You may not know that I’m in the band here at Cal, but I am. It takes up about half of my life in the fall, and more like three fourths of it this past week.
The rivalry between Stanfurd and Cal is a nice friendly one, but it’s still lots of fun, and in the end, we still have the axe, and here’s to keeping it for another year. GO BEARS!
The game’s on Saturday November 19th, 4PM PST, on ABC. You can also listen/track it on calbears.com.
Update: Final score: 28 - 3, Cal. Go bears.
Best User Interface Award
Saturday, October 29th, 2005

This should get an award for the best user interface ever devised for a microwave. I mean, look at it: it’s a dial. It’s accurate, obvious, intuitive, usable in a single motion, looks like a clock (our standard mental model of time), and it’s really friggin’ simple.
Why in God’s name did they ever switch to numbers? Someone in the home appliance industry please read this and bring the dial back to the microwaves of the world. People will think it’s genius and they’ll buy your microwaves, I promise.
It really is better, in case you’re skeptical. It is so easy just to turn the dial, there’s nothing to think about. Want to add more time? Just turn the dial more. It makes so much sense it scares me sometimes.
New Photostack in beta
Wednesday, October 5th, 2005
Noel Jackson has released the beta of the new version of Photostack! Congratulations!
I have to say that the original Photostack was about 65% of the inspiration for zenphoto. I loved the innovative way it just took folders of photos and stuck ‘em online, and the only reason I wrote zenphoto was because I saw demand for something that could move beyond Photostack, that I could play with and innovate on in little areas. I haven’t tried the new Photostack yet, but I’m thrilled to see it doing the same thing.
Come to think of it, there are a lot of good new photo gallery apps popping up. I say try them all and use what works best for you. I know I’ll try Photostack, if only for old time’s sake… ![]()

Finally got around to moving my own photo gallery to zenphoto. Check it out. I uploaded a couple new albums to sweeten the deal.
New Camera
Tuesday, September 6th, 2005

Thought my twenty-first birthday wasn’t a drunken bash (thankfully) I did get one great present. An Olympus E-300 DSLR camera. 8 Megapixels, two lenses, and all the fixins. I’ve been using it almost non stop for three days and it’s been amazing so far. The quality is obviously wonderful, and having two lenses is great.
I’ve mostly just been playing around with it so far… getting used to all the controls (which are very intuitive) and starting to understand aperture and shutter speed a little better, but I think I got some good shots from around Berkeley. Check out the shoot in the zenphoto gallery.
I can’t tell you how nice it is to finally have a real camera. ![]()
