Camera Stolen…

Monday, June 26th, 2006

I feel really stupid for leaving my car unlocked last week, and my camera, a nice Olympus E300 DSLR was stolen out of it, along with two nice lenses and a memory card I just bought! I was very saddened.

Anyway, it’s been a long while. A boring and challenging day job wears you out and if you don’t simply relax during off-hours you can’t really survive I don’t think. So unfortunately I haven’t had any drive to work on zenphoto, or on anything else for that matter. The job is sucking the life out of me.

Fortunately I’m going to Europe for three weeks in July to fix that. :)

Alright, time to head home. Monday is finally over…

The Daily Grind

Wednesday, June 7th, 2006

I’m back in Southern California working for Patagonia on a PLM implementation again… it’s pretty tiring work, especially since installing the test environment on my laptop has taken two entire days and still isn’t finished. Once I get it up and running (hopefully today) I’ll have a little more fun.

Home is always good to come back to and hard to leave at the same time—I think I have two homes now and each of them has people I love, but they’re unfortunately 300 miles apart. But I am amazed at the ability of technology to make that distance disappear for a little time each day… it’s amazing that you can hear and see everything so clearly even though it’s so far away and it makes you feel like the two places are connected somehow, or more importantly, that the people are. So thanks, Skype, for helping make the distance at least bearable.

When I’ve thrown off the weight of this crazy stone
When I’ve lost all care for the things I own
That’s when I miss you…
You who are my home.”

Zenphoto 1.0.3 Released!

Thursday, June 1st, 2006

Ahh the smell of fresh code in the morning…

Just released zp 1.0.3. It’s got lots of new features and about a million bugfixes, so defininitely upgrade soon if you can. Get it at zenphoto.org as usual.

The coolest part of this release is a huge rework of i.php, the image processor. While it used to only have some limited resizing options (longest side, width, or cropped thumbnail), now it does anything you darn well want it to. You can specify exact width and height and crop dimensions and position. As of now, it’s kinda hard to formulate the input URLs for everyday use, but plugin authors and theme developers should find the new options pretty much awesome. If you want to know more about how it works, check out this wiki article I wrote.

Now that this release is out, we should be able to ride it for a while and work on more than just fixing bugs; we’ll work on features like subalbums, for example. :) Another thing to look forward to: some amazing speed improvements. I guess that’s what you get when you’re slightly detail-obsessive and annoyed by something a little lacking… heck, that’s how ZP started in the first place! (And while we’re on the subject, why can’t WordPress get my line breaks right?? Details, people, details…)

Now that I’m graduated I’ll have a little time to spare to keep working on this thing. It’s really pretty rewarding and worthwhile, actually, so thanks to all of you for using it and enjoying it (I hope). Now, since it is zenphoto, I leave you with a couple photos.
