zenphoto 0.5 - “Almost Ready”

August 16th 2005

I’ve been working hard on the list, and I do believe I’ve got everything I wanted for 1.0 in.

So what are we waiting for? I don’t have internet. I’m working internetless, and then borrowing some poor soul’s wireless connection from the other side of the house for e-mail and necessities.

We’re also waiting for Joen to finish his theme, which will be the one shipped as “default” with the 1.0 release. So put the pressure on over there!

For now, I invite you to take a look at the newest version, which is done enough for me to start using it. You’ll be particularly interested in the new “options” admin tab, with a theme switcher, with a first draft of the new default theme…

Zenphoto 0.5 (new photos from Yosemite)
Control Panel (user: admin, pass: 1234)

I left uploading on, but please be nice and just do small pictures if you want to test it. Also, try not to delete too many comments. Thanks.

Update on the Safari bug: – It should be working now. Again, to try it, just log in to the admin, click “view gallery” and try to edit a title and description. Thanks for testing.

I’m really quite excited, this script has some great potential.

Once it’s released I’m pretty sure I’d give it a go, maybe even develop some themes or plugins, it looks like it’s shaping up to be a good system.

    Nice job.
Will this have Wordpress plugin in version 1?
    Or am I daydreaming?

i’m leaving on tuesday for london and will be gone for the next four months. before i go i was hoping to set up zenphoto on my site. what do you think the odds are of things being done by then? things are looking like they’re shaping up quite nicely – i’m definitely impressed and excited for things. thanks for all your hardwork!

Vish – you’re daydreaming. No wordpress until a later release.

But – one cool feature you can use is to go to any zenphoto page, view the sized image, alter the URL to change the size to whatever you want (usually the width of your blog), copy it, and paste it into wordpress. This is how I’ve been doing all my photos since I had this feature working ;-)

Timothy - Check your e-mail. For the rest of you, I can say with some certainty that we can have a release by the end of the week, and definately by early next week.

Looks awesome. I wish I had 1/10 of your design skills. What language are you using? I might be willing to try it out. Gallery is big pain to get working.

    Can’t wait for the release!

Safari does act strangly with the AJAX. When editing the title, it automatically pushes the title box/title off of the first line to the one below. From there, if you try to edit the description, nothing appears in the textbox. I thought the description remained, as does the title, in firefox when i tried a few weeks ago. Either way, the title/description do update correctly after saving them…

Thanks Amory. I’ve still got some positioning bugs in other browsers too, so maybe if I tweak those it’ll get better in Safari. But as long as it works, then that’s good enough for now. :)

I must say your photos are awesome, Tristan. I have a bunch of photos from this summer just waiting for zenphoto! Can’t wait for the release! :D

Hi Tristan, so are you using mysql now?

Looking very cool, and I’m digging Joen’s template. And I can indeed verify a Safari bug; it doesn’t save the changes :(

    Hi Tristan!
I made a test by adding a little gallery yesterday and it’s really simple and good looking. I’ve got some suggestion to make:

    1. The ability to activate/desactivate the “comments option” for the entire gallery. (I think some people wants a really really simple gallery without comments)

    2. The ability to sort the list of album (by drag&drop would be great, look at this url http://tool-man.org/examples/sorting.html).

    3. The ability to separate albums in categories (nature, portrait, landscape,..) and even to make subcategories (nature>tree, nature>animal,...). That don’t need to be on different page, just a title of the category and subcategory in the list.

“The maximum size of all data you can upload at once is 2MB.”

    My camera makes 3MB photos.

Other than that, I am looking forward to the release of zenphoto, it looks good

  14. gilhoo Commented at 6:25 am on August 21st 2005

Darryn> What the use of sending a 3MB picture for a web gallery? a 1024px is big enough for the majority of computer screen!

  15. Tristan Commented at 2:00 pm on August 21st 2005

That upload setting is on the server—it’s a PHP.ini option. It happens to be set to 2MB.

Remember that you can use FTP or any other method to upload photos, especially if you want to do a lot. It works exactly like photostack in that sense—any folder in the ‘albums’ directory with pictures in it is considered an album.

  16. gilhoo Commented at 6:42 am on August 23rd 2005

There is still a problem with AJAX on Safari. When you edit a description directly under the picture in the gallery, you can write the text but when you click on save, you’ve got that message : “Java Script / undefined Null value”

  17. Tristan Commented at 8:43 am on August 23rd 2005

Sorry about the safari bug everyone—the change that fixed it somehow got rolled back. Try it again?

  18. gilhoo Commented at 11:53 am on August 23rd 2005

So… I try again and when I click on the save button there is still that java script message but if you reload the page, the text has been save as I can see it under the picture.

Any update on the release? I can’t wait :)

...neither can I. Looks great, Tristan!
