Plans
Tuesday, August 30th, 2005
Death Cab for Cutie released their new album “Plans” today, and if you have any doubts, may I dispel them quickly. This is an excellent album worthy of buying.
I’ve only listened to it twice through, but it’s already growing on me. I don’t want to rave about it yet because I really should listen to it more, but it’s definately good. My only complaints are one song that I don’t particularly like, and that it’s a little short. Other than that, there’s a lot of stuff that really makes you think about all the important things, and it all sounds great if you’d rather not think. In combination, it works even better.
And they sold out to Atlantic. But honestly, who cares? They’re making good music; let them be rewarded.
Update on zenphoto
Tuesday, August 23rd, 2005
Joen’s theme for the upcoming zenphoto is complete, so check out his post on the usability and design strategies he incorporated into it.
I figured I should show it in action, so I’ve uploaded the latest zenphoto to the usual place, which is full of some great new design.
No, it’s not done yet. Look, I’m on 0.6, and I’ve got 0.7-0.9 to go before I can call it 1.0!
If you want to see exactly how much left there is, look at the list, and please tell me if there are things in for 1.0 you don’t care about so I can put them off until later.
Also, while I remember, I prefer the spelling “zenphoto”, though I really don’t care if you capitalize and add spaces.
Also, if you’re looking for an amazing new album to listen to, get Illinoise by Sufjan Stevens (iTunes) now. It’s blown me away on first listen, and I’m still only on track 20.
zenphoto 0.5 - “Almost Ready”
Tuesday, August 16th, 2005
I’ve been working hard on the list, and I do believe I’ve got everything I wanted for 1.0 in.
So what are we waiting for? I don’t have internet. I’m working internetless, and then borrowing some poor soul’s wireless connection from the other side of the house for e-mail and necessities.
We’re also waiting for Joen to finish his theme, which will be the one shipped as “default” with the 1.0 release. So put the pressure on over there!
For now, I invite you to take a look at the newest version, which is done enough for me to start using it. You’ll be particularly interested in the new “options” admin tab, with a theme switcher, with a first draft of the new default theme…
Zenphoto 0.5 (new photos from Yosemite)
Control Panel (user: admin, pass: 1234)
I left uploading on, but please be nice and just do small pictures if you want to test it. Also, try not to delete too many comments. Thanks.
Update on the Safari bug: – It should be working now. Again, to try it, just log in to the admin, click “view gallery” and try to edit a title and description. Thanks for testing.
The golden days of recording…

A warning on a special edition audiophile recording of Holst’s 1st and 2nd suites. Now that is what audio quality is all about.
256MB (2×128MB) Laptop RAM

I’ve got 2 sticks of PC133 144-pin SODIMM SDRAM from when I upgraded the memory in my ThinkPad to 1 GB… I’ve got no use for them, so if think you can use them, they’re yours, just pay me shipping. First commenter wins, or we can split them up if you like.
Sonic Boom
Tuesday, August 9th, 2005
About 18 minutes ago, Southern California was rocked by an unfamiliar double sonic boom, indicating shuttle re-entry to land at Edwards Air Force Base. Everything went fine, and the shuttle crew is now safely back on earth.
Now, most people, including myself, forgot this. So thank you, NASA, for having the quickest news I’ve ever seen on any site ever. I literally heard the sonic boom, got scared that LA was nuked for 12 seconds, realized what it was, went to NASA’s site, and there was a picture of the shuttle landing (albeit probably not this shuttle, but still), and a succesful landing blurb. I mean, the thing was practically still in the air!
Kudos to the NASA web team. Unless, of course, it was all pre-canned and they were just really confident that they didn’t even have to wait, in which case, kudos to NASA.
Back from vacation
Sunday, August 7th, 2005
Just got back from a wonderful camping trip in Yosemite tonight. I’ve had a lot of time to think, and some of that thinking was about zenphoto, photography, and how they fit together for me. I’ve read all the comments on the last post and I’ll address a couple points before I go to sleep…
1. Themes – I actually got internet access halfway through (I had to—waiting for an important e-mail) so I got Jonas’ comment about per-album themes, and decided to implement it all on paper. So I did. I think it’ll work, but I haven’t actually tested it on a computer yet. My brain does pretty well, but it might take some translation time.
In short, themes will be in 1.0, and because it’s easy, so will per-album theme overrides. I think it’s a nice feature, and it’s purpose is obvious enough in context that it doesn’t detract from anything.
2. I’m going to sleep. I think I was going to have a second item, but I forgot it. Camping got me on a sleep schedule something like: “sleep when dark, awake when light.”
More later, including pictures from the high Sierra.
