zenphoto 0.3 - “AJAX Fireworks”

July 4th 2005

Okay, so I should have been working on the more fundamental stuff instead, but I got totally hooked on making the AJAX go (though I did cookie comment info). I left admin mode on by default so everyone can play with it. Yes, that means you can add titles and descriptions to my images! It’s great. You’ll love it.

I must warn: it works in IE, but it works a lot better in any other browser. I expect anyone administrating zenphoto to not use IE, so this shouldn’t be a problem. Mainly, you lose the really cool javascript form editing features like automagically resizing textareas.

And yes, those were the fireworks this evening. Happy 4th of July!

Grand Finale

    Crikey. Just awesome stuff.

Tristan, what does it feel like to be hotly anticipated?

Hoohoo! This is getting more and more exciting! The editing is super simple and intuitive, I love it. It seems like some of the editing functions might be controlled by the template, is that correct? I’m thinking of the main page where the gallery descriptions are not editable.

I was also wondering, will it be possible to nest galleries in folders within folders?

  3. Tristan Commented at 7:33 am on July 5th 2005

Stephane — Yes, the editing is completely template controlled like everything else. You simply give the template function a flag (just title and description for now; date/time, place, etc will come later) and it becomes editable, with the edit box inheriting any styles you’ve given to the original DIV. Of course, it’s only editable if the user is a logged-in admin. For the main page, I’d have to tweak the function a little to let it know which thing to save to, but that’s no big deal. Then you can edit all at once like you’re thinking.

Nesting is very possible, but I’d like to keep it simple for now. It’s already on the list, so it should eventually come.

Chris — It feels good, and more importantly, makes me work harder. :)

    Looks good so far.

    Nice work, mate.

    Yet another anticipant. =)

I’m a little late to the party, but I like your progress. I used photostack last year, but grew tired of its stagnant develop and lack of comments and general polish. Not wanting to install the bloat that is Gallery, I searched and searched for a better application.

Finding none, I caved and went with Flickr. The community features are really nice and I did pay $80 for a pro account for two years (extended to 4), but it just feels odd to have people go from my site to Flickr. I mean, I’m paying for hosting right?

I resumed my search today and found your effort. This sounds like it’s perfect and making great progress. Keep it up! PLEASE!

It seems like it has some problem with Safari: when I hit “Save”, I get an error: “undefined Null value”; and the input box remain active.
But if I reload the page the title is modified is I intended it.

It’s just a tiny problem, otherwise is perfect!

This looks great. I am looking for a gallery solution and there is nothing on the market that is simple in principle. Love version 0.3 already. Use of AJAX is awesome.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, if it has sorry about that, but what about the a thumbnail gallery on the side of every image? Same way iPAP does it I guess?

  10. Tristan Commented at 10:32 pm on July 9th 2005

Khaled — that’s all up to the template. Within the image’s page, the album it’s in is completely accessible, as is the gallery listing. You can easily (with a little PHP) print the five or seven images around the current one in a row below or to the side. I might make a template function to make it more automatic.

    Wow this is great,
btw I’ve mailed you about your theme perhaps you could look at it.

Looks amazing so far! Very nice.
I was wondering if you could have a fading effect when a picture loads or if you move onto the next picture?

I would love to see it in this WP-Gallery-Plugin. :)

  13. Tristan Commented at 5:36 pm on July 27th 2005

Bilal — That could be an option; it’s very easy to do with javascript, and already implemented in Photostack. Probably won’t be on by default though.

Everyone — 0.4 is coming soon (tonight or tomorrow), and 0.5 will be the first full-featured (minus groups and searches) public release. Expect that in the middle of August. :)

Tristan — Thanks! Can’t wait for the release! :)
