Playlist Meme
December 17th 2004
This is a rather fun meme that I thought I’d take the time to spread. Parent is Joen Asmussen.
The rules for the playlist meme are simple:
- Open up the music player on your computer.
- Set it to play your entire music collection.
- Hit the “shuffle” button.
- Tell us the title of the next ten songs that show up (with their musicians), no matter how embarrassing. That’s right, no skipping that Carpenters tune that will totally destroy your hip credibility. It’s time for total musical honesty. Write it up in your blog or journal and link back to at least a couple of the other sites where you saw this.
- If you get the same artist twice, you may skip the second (or third, etc.) occurances. You don’t have to, but since randomness could mean you end up with a list of ten song with five artists, you can if you’d like.
So, without anxiety or pretense, here are my ten (Title - Artist - Album):
- Push - Sarah McLachlan - Afterglow
- Threat - Jay-Z - The Black Album
- Whole New You - Shawn Colvin - Whole New You
- Young and Foolish - Bill Evans - Complete Riverside Recordings
- Let’s Get Loud - J-Lo - On the 6
- Austin Powers Intro - Darian Sahanaja - (Soundtrack)
- Spit on a Stranger - Nickel Creek - This Side
- Enigma Variations IX: Nimrod - Elgar
- Snuff That Girl - Urinetown, original cast recording
- If You Could See Me Now - Natalie Cole - Stardust
I did exercise rule #5 if you care, just to make it a little more diverse.
That’s a fairly surprising list, specifically because the entire genre of rock isn’t represented. I don’t like Winamp’s randomizer. I got Sarah McLachlan three times and it even went to the track directly following the Nickel Creek song…
I’d say it’s a fairly accurate representation of my collection though. I’ve got a lot of music, so the fact that 30% of it (my Rock folder, 5.7GB in size, compared to everything, 18.4 GB) isn’t in a random sampling of 10 doesn’t surprise me all that much. I know most of the music I have isn’t “cool” or “hip” anyway, but still, a little Death Cab or Jimmy Eat World would have been nice to hear.
I do reccomend actually skipping around and playing the songs rather than simply randomizing the list and writing down the top ten. It makes for a much better experience. I also reccomend just playing your whole collection randomly every once in a while. I know that every song I have is there for a reason, and it’s nice to get reminded of that.

The reason I like this meme is that it does say a lot about a person, to read 10 random songs!
Tho you must elaborate: Who’s “Urinetown” ?
Hehe, Urinetown is a musical, which I actually saw when I was in New York a few years ago. It’s sort of a spoof on the whole musical genre, and it’s hilarious and dramatic at the same time…
Definately like this meme more than most; it actually does reveal a lot about a person. Like I said, each song I have is there for a reason, and I’m sure that’s true for most people.
