Cool.

I have been very busy with school lately, thinking perhaps that writing in a weblog that no one reads or cares about is a small waste of time… I’ll try to post a link now and then, and maybe focus more on trisphotolog...
Anyway, I’ve had a great first week of my third semester. All of my classes, though all technical, look very interesting, and the professors seem enthusiastic and good.
I realised what it was like to have no money the other day. I had to buy books, and I was in the book store looking at the prices, and I thought, gee, I can’t possibly pay for these. Even if I could, I’d have nothing left over. It’s a bad feeling. So I saw my mom today, who is in Berkeley for a dog training conference, and she gave me book money. Yay. I’m not complaining or anything; I know I’ve got a house and automatic food and friends and go to an awesome school all because of my parents, and I am grateful for that; it’s just that having no spending money weirds me out, obviously…
I also scored a 4-CD set of the complete Star Wars soundtrack trilogy for $12 at this used bookstore my mom dragged me into (just kidding, I like books).
Anyway, my cool link for the day is this guy’s site. It’s got some pretty friggin awesome LEGO sculptures.
That’s about it. ::

Berkeley
Thursday, January 15th, 2004
I am back in Berkeley! Leave for the ski trip tomorrow afternoon, after lunch with my grandfather and father. It’s good to see grandpa again—it’s been more than a year, and I don’t think he’ll last another frankly, and neither does he… but he’s happy and still having as much fun as he can, and always has interesting stories… a good man in my book.
I enjoy using a mouse again. Though a Trackpoint is much much better than a touchpad. And for some reason, I don’t have that re-learning curve for the mouse again like you get when you don’t use a mouse for a month… maybe it’s just the association between the movement of some device controlling something else that your brain has to get used to. Or maybe I’ve just used a computer for too long.
I should pack. Don’t want to forget anything, especially sunglasses, for this weekend. ::

GO SQUIRR– er, BEARS!

College Squirrel ratings! – Note UC Berkeley’s score of 5 for the number, quality, and health of our squirrels. Also note Stanfurd’s rating of “4+” accompanied by the following text….
... Stanfurd student verbosely and egotistically describing Stanfurd’s claimed superior squirrel population…
An impressive review of Stanford’s “squirrel resources.” However the quality of the “squirrel session” you get must also be taken into account, not simply how great the environment is over thousands of acres. At Berkeley, if you sit on the “squirrel log” you will be approached by dozens of plump, cute, furry fox squirrels! Stanford is upgraded to a “4+” rating, but Cal (Berkeley) is still number one!
Go bears. Now, we also have better Squirrels than them. ::

Okay, it’s at the top of the daypop top 40 links, and it’s really good, so I’ll add another one to the counter.
Work!
Wednesday, January 7th, 2004
Work isn’t so bad! Turns out I get to do things about 100 times more interesting and fun than data entry. I’m working in the fabric lab, testing all sorts of new fabrics. It reminds me of physics labs in high school, but with cooler gadgets and machines and more important results. It’s very cool that I’m doing something important. And it’ll help pay for ski trip #2, which leaves next Thursday. I want to be back in Berkeley by Wednesday night at the latest, Wednesday morning would be better. I need to wash one load of ski stuff and then pack it. Oh, and rent skis.
Oooog… got my math grade just now. I passed, at least. CS is pending, but looks similar… looks like I’ll be talking to an academic advisor when I get back, because this potential CS student’s GPA isn’t gonna stay near 3.3 for long…
Time to get some food. Very important.
Oh yeah—don’t forget trisphoto. And you might as well go here too. ::
Ugh.

The only time I wake up before dawn is for skiing. So this is way too friggin early for anything but. ::
Boring home life…
Monday, January 5th, 2004
Seriously, there’s nothing to do here. But there is good, free coffee. That’s the good part. I’m mostly kidding though. It’s not all that bad. I mean, there is fast internet, largely thanks to my nagging over the summer, as well as complaining every other time I was home last year. Musta worked well, ‘cause we’ve got WiFi now too. (grin).
Tomorrow, I am going to work with my dad. Apparently one of his employees is sick or abducted by aliens or something and isn’t at work, so I will be taking her place. Doing data entry. Fun stuff, that data entry. I could say that it’ll be less boring than sitting on my ass at home doing nothing, but really, being a college student has taught me that one must cherish those times when one can just sit on his ass and do nothing. Every other time is either work or something better than sitting on your ass, which you’d be doing if you had something better to do, so it’s really not something you think about while sitting on your ass. So it’s the best possible thing you can be doing at the time, and for that, you can’t say anything very bad about it. And that’s my philosiphy of sitting on your ass.
One more thing about being lazy at home—it doesn’t require you to wake up at a decent hour. You don’t say, “I’d better set my alarm for 8 tomorrow morning—I have a very important meeting with the couch.” Nope. You get to sleep in. Glory of glories. But tomorrow, because of that “work” thing, I have to wake up at the ungodly hour of 6:30. In the morning. No, I’m not bitter.
If you’re actually doing nothing tomorrow, think of me doing tedious data entry, and perhaps look at this web site, because you know it’s better than sitting on your ass.
Also don’t forget to keep checking trisphoto, ‘cause I’m too lazy to put a permanent link up on the top there… maybe tomorrow. ::
